XMRV Basics Researchers at the Whittemore Peterson Institute suspected XMRV may be linked to neuro-immune diseases because those diagnosed with ME/CFS have a unique immune deficiency in part of their antiviral system. This deficiency was also found in patients whose cancer samples led to the discovery of XMRV. XMRV cannot be transmitted through the air. Rather, it is thought that XMRV is transmitted through body fluids (blood, semen, breast etc) This means XMRV may be transmitted through sexual contact, blood transfusions, and sharing needles. Recent research has shown that of the anti-retrovirals currently available only AZT blocked XMRV infection and replication. If XMRV becomes established as a cause of CFS/ME or Fibromyalgia AZT may be useful for preventing or treating XMRV infections in humans. However doctors and scientists strongly advise against anyone with CFS/ME or other neuro-immune diseases from taking this medication; far more research is required. |
